Licensed Veterinary Technician/Nurse

Pet Care Clinic of Kokomo is a very fast paced companion animal clinic and we are ready to add another Licensed Veterinary Nurse to our team.

Position Summary

A licensed veterinary nurse at Pet Care Clinic will directly handle inpatient and outpatient care, working hand-in-hand with veterinarians, veterinary assistants, animal care specialists and kennel attendants. The nurse assists in exam rooms by taking patients’ history, vital signs and weight; preparing vaccines; collecting samples and running diagnostic tests; providing client education; and assisting with animal restraint. Nurses also may see their own appointments for dental prophylaxis, suture removal; nail trim, vaccine administration when a doctor exam is not required, long-term medication monitoring testing, surgery admission and discharge and check-in exams.  They assist in surgery and monitor anesthesia of patients. Nurses directly impact doctors’ productivity, client service and patient care.  Our nurses play a key role in communicating with clients in person and by phone for follow-up care and patient monitoring. Recent graduates are encouraged, as mentoring employees is a part of the culture of Pet Care Clinic.

Educational Requirements & Skills Needed

Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in applied science, veterinary technology
  • State license to work as a certified/licensed/registered veterinary nurse in Indiana

Skills Needed:

  • Prior veterinary experience required.
  • Ability to assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery
  • Ability to work as a team with a staff of Veterinary Nurses, Veterinary Assistants and Kennel Attendants

Physical Obligations:

  • Able to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance

Veterinary Assistant: Part Time or Full Time

Position Summary 

A veterinary assistant supports technicians and veterinarians in exams, treatment, surgery and boarding. The veterinary assistant assists with animal restraint, housekeeping, client communication, treatments and surgeries. Veterinary assistants support both certified veterinary technicians and veterinarians in daily patient care. They answer multi-lined phone system, schedule appointments and handle day-to-day communications with clients in person and by phone for follow-up care and patient monitoring. They dispense client medication as directed by veterinarian. They should exhibit a professional, pleasant and welcoming manner, while handling the duties and responsibilities of the position in a fast-paced veterinary clinic

 

Job Responsibilities

Client Services Duties

  • Professional, cheerful and helpful attitude when interacting with pet owners
  • Knowledge of common diseases, their symptoms and means of transmission
  • Knowledge of preventative health care recommendations to answer questions and assist in marketing veterinary services from which clients’ pets would benefit:
  • Answer multiple telephone lines and provide information/assistance or routes caller to appropriate staff member
  • Takes phone or visitor messages and delivers to appropriate individual
  • Greets clients and follows check-in procedure
  • Know how to check out clients and discharge hospitalized patients
  • Update and maintain accurate client records and patient medical records
  • Handle day-to-day communications with clients
  • Invoices customer for veterinary services
  • Accurately handle cashier transactions
  • Operate common office equipment such as: copier, printer, fax machine, and credit card terminal
  • Dispenses client medication as directed by veterinarian
  • Routine cleaning of work area is shared responsibility of all clinic employees

Technical Duties:

Patient Care

  • Care for hospitalized animals, including cage cleaning, exercising, feeding, observing signs of illness and controlling the spread of parasites and infectious diseases
  • Restrain patients for procedures performed by technicians or doctors
  • Administer medications
  • Assess change in animal status
  • Trim nails, clean ears, express glands
  • Bathing
  • Ensure hospital patients go home well groomed and in an appropriate medical state

Laboratory & Pharmacy

  • Perform basic in-house lab tests
  • Complete forms for reference lab
  • Fill out lab reports and logs
  • Clean lab area
  • Fill prescriptions

Treatment

  • Assist with treatments noted on treatment board and in medical records (hospitalized patients, surgeries, dentistry patients)
  • Assist veterinarians and technicians with daily treatments
  • Provide nursing care
  • Assist with restraint for x-rays and process films
  • Accurately number and file x-rays; record x-rays in log and medical records
  • Use and maintain IV pumps

Surgery

  • Admit patients scheduled for surgery and dentistry
  • Keep surgical materials stocked
  • Prepare gown and surgical packs
  • Check oxygen lines and waste gas scavenger system; turn off scavenger system after surgical procedures are completed
  • Prepare surgery suite for surgery
  • Prepare instruments; know type of surgical instruments required for specific surgeries
  • Assist veterinarians and/or veterinary technician with patient restraint
  • Assist veterinarians and/or veterinary technician with induction/intubation
  • Surgical preparation of patient
  • Monitor anesthesia closely with monitoring equipment such as pulse oximeter and electrocardiogram
  • Help maintain anesthesia machine
  • Monitor patients waking up from anesthesia; assist with treatment if patient has reaction to anesthesia
  • Clean surgery suite and surgical instruments after each procedure following hospital sterilization protocols
  • Ensure hospital patients go home well groomed and in an appropriate medical state

Dentistry

  • Clean, scale and polish teeth using dental equipment and hand instruments
  • Report dental problems to veterinarians for instructions
  • Assist veterinarians performing oral extractions or other dental procedures
  • Complete dental report cards

Medical Records

  • Update medical records with progress notes
  • Communicate with doctors and technicians through notations in medical records
  • Record information for hospitalized patients including:
    • Daily status each time a technician touches a patient, time, procedures and observations
    • Hospitalized procedures such as surgeries, radiographs and dentistry
    • veterinarian’s surgical notes
    • Lab test results
    • Dental charts
    • Injections, medications, fluid therapy, pain management
  • Note homecare instructions given to and reviewed with client
  • Collect signatures on consent forms and estimates/treatment plans

Housekeeping Duties:

  • Maintain cleanliness of surgery suite, treatment area and exams rooms for all surfaces, including lights, tables, cabinets, walls and floors
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and longevity by vacuuming pet hair from keyboards, wheels and equipment
  • Vacuum computer keyboards in treatment area, lab/pharmacy and exam rooms
  • Clean glass windows and doors throughout clinic
  • Sweep and mop floors in surgery suite, exam rooms and treatment area
  • Keep food and drinks out of treatment area and surgery suite
  • Discard syringes in proper containers
  • Empty trash
  • Clean water and food bowls for hospitalized pets
  • Clean cages and bedding for hospitalized pets
  • Organize radiology gowns, gloves and badges, making sure they are neatly hung or stored
  • Assist with facility and yard maintenance to maintain a clean, odorless and inviting environment
  • Scrub and polish sinks
  • Wipe down walls and baseboards in the surgery suite, treatment area and exam rooms
  • Clean cages
  • Do laundry

Inventory

  • Unpack deliveries, reconcile against packing slip and restock supplies
  • Restock shelves and drawers in exam rooms and treatment area
  • Assist with ordering of drugs and supplies
  • Assist with purchasing and stocking of cleaning and office supplies

 

Educational Requirements & Skills Needed

  • Formal or on-the-job training in veterinary technology

Kennel Attendant: Part Time

Position Summary 

The Kennel Attendants at Pet Care Clinic should exhibit a professional, pleasant, and welcoming manner, while handling the duties and responsibilities of the position in a fast paced veterinary clinic.

Job Responsibilities 

 Patient Care

  • Care for hospitalized animals, including cage cleaning, exercising, feeding, observing signs of illness and controlling the spread of parasites and infectious diseases
  • Feed, water and walk pets staying in the kennels as directed by clinic staff
  • Observe animals recovering from surgery and notify veterinarians of any unusual changes or symptoms
  • Communicates change in animal status to appropriate staff
  • Bathe animals as directed
  • Ensure hospital patients go home well groomed and in an appropriate medical state

Laboratory & Pharmacy 

  • Assist in the collection of laboratory specimens such as urine and feces for testing

Treatment & Surgery 

  • Assist veterinarians and technicians with daily treatments as directed
  • Assist or restrain animals during veterinary procedures as needed (once properly trained
  • Prepare exam and treatment rooms by stocking them with appropriate supplies
  • Ensure hospital patients go home well groomed and in an appropriate medical state
  • Provide assistance with the aftercare of euthanized animals as needed

Clinic Housekeeping             

  • Oversee daily laundering of blankets, towels, smocks etc.
  • Prepare examination or treatment rooms by stocking them with appropriate supplies
  • Clean and maintain kennels, examination and surgery rooms to control the spread of disease
  • Assist co-workers with daily check-list and end of day responsibilities
  • Oversee general cleaning of clinic facilities

Educational Requirements & Skills Needed              

Educational Requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • High school diploma or equivalent or attending Career Center studying Veterinary Careers
  • Interest in veterinary technology career
  • Previous clinical experience is preferred

 Skills Needed: 

  • Ability and willingness to assist technicians, doctors and receptionists
