Working at Pet Care Clinic the last 12 years has changed my whole life. I didn’t know that working could be so fulfilling until being here. I found my career, passion, mentorship, and friends – both co-workers and clients alike. My job here has opened doors in my life that I didn’t know could ever be unlocked! Pet Care Clinic changes something in anyone that comes here. It’s an opportunity to see how great a workplace culture can be, how you can respect one another whether agreeing or disagreeing, how loving what you do makes it great to get up each day and head to the same place, and how helping animals & their owners makes us better humans! There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t feel some amount of gratitude for having my job here, and I recognize how rare that it in today’s world. I truly love my job! – Amanda

“Why I Love My Job” from Ashley’s perspective:

What makes me love this job is not only the clients and patients we see on a daily basis but the amazing team I get to work with and call family. I started at Pet Care Clinic in January of 2017 while finishing my schooling at Indiana University Kokomo for my bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism. Everyone may not know that I graduated last May and am in search of my “dream job” to fulfill my passion for planning and coordinating events. I have gotten to know a lot of our clients personally, and I enjoy speaking with them at their visits. My team and our clients/patients mean so much! I couldn’t ask for a better place to have spent my last 2 and a half years and will miss everyone greatly when I have to say goodbye. But for now, you will continue to see me here daily as I still get to see you all with your furr babies, which really bring joy to my day!

Changes to Our After-Hours Emergency Services

Clients of Pet Care Clinic,

I have provided emergency care for my patients during my entire 36 year career. The past 13 years, we have shared after-hours emergency duties with Greentown Animal Hospital and Jefferson Road Animal Hospital. It is with a heavy heart that I announce:

We will no longer be offering after-hours emergency visits effective September 30th.

The market for associate veterinarians has been limited and competitive in the past few years.  As a result, is has been difficult attracting veterinary professionals to communities, like ours, that rely on most veterinary practices to provide normal daily care plus after-hours emergency care. Many of the new veterinary graduates cannot fulfill the duties of daily practice and emergency duties combined. As my generation of practitioners near retirement, we have to make changes now to ensure our patients, current and future, have a means of obtaining emergency care.

We are fortunate to be within one hour of four different 24/7 emergency clinics for critical patient needs. However, many of the calls we receive during hours we are closed simply require advice or determination of the urgency of care. With that in mind, we have chosen to employ GuardianVets to help with after-hours concerns. This service does not have a cost to you; it is a service we pay for on your behalf in our continued effort to find ways to meet our clients’ and patients’ needs.

Starting September 30th, when you call our clinic after business hours, you can select an option to talk to GuardianVets licensed veterinary nurses. While GuardianVets cannot directly prescribe medications or treatments, they will help navigate your concerns and direct you, if needed, to an appropriate emergency hospital.  All calls will be logged and transmitted to our staff here at Pet Care Clinic on the next business day so you can rest assured we remain in the loop about your pet’s medical care.

Growing up, I always had a natural love for animals and couldn’t imagine having a life without them. In high school, I took a veterinary careers class, which led me to discover that my career goal in life is to become a veterinarian. Working here at Pet Care Clinic has given me so much experience while also working with the greatest people. I have gained valuable insight from Dr. Hiss and the staff that will help me achieve my goal. Oh and of course, I love being able to hold all of the furry animals that come in everyday! I love my job and what I do, and I am grateful for the opportunities that Pet Care Clinic has given me thus far. – Rachelle

“Why I Love My Job” from Erica’s perspective:

Working with animals can be a tough job, throughout the day you get covered in scratches, and mysterious stains (that you hope are just slobber), but all the hard work is so worth it in the end just to see a tail wag or hear a purr. I love my job because of the animals that I get to care for each day and for the amazing team I get to work alongside. I started at Pet Care Clinic in May to fulfill my internship requirement for school, and I can’t imagine having gone anywhere else. Everyone at the clinic has gone out of their way to help me get the best experience possible, and I can’t thank them enough. It is because of their hard work and the amazing mentoring I received that I am one step closer to earning my Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing. I have decided to continue working part-time at Pet Care Clinic as I finish up my last year of school, so you’re sure to still see me around! – Erica

Working with animals has always been something I wanted to do since a young age. I have always been willing to learn how to and then strive to provide the utmost care for all patients. It’s so much more than just playing with puppies and kittens all day, like some may think. Working alongside Dr. Hiss and other veterinary nurses and assistants, I have learned what to do to get to where I want to be in patient care. I love being able to grow in the field, learn new things along the way, and I love all our furry patients. – Taylor

“Why I Love My Job” From Nancy’s Perspective!

Pet Care Clinic has been a part of my life since 1983! I actually started working in the clinic in 2005. From the first day here I have enjoyed meeting our clients and patients! Our own two pugs are from clients! 

My favorite thing about being here is to watch our employee family develop their skills and grow as a team. I love the positive feedback we receive from clients and how caring our staff is with their beloved pet. 

A number of our past and present employees came on board as high school or college students. To watch them mature and become caring successful adults is such a positive feeling. Often times, they are here until they have the opportunity to achieve their dreams, either a job or a family. Julie, Kaleb, Chandra, Erica, Brianne are just a few who were awesome team members who went on to other endeavors, but keep in touch and visit us on a regular basis. There are many others! 

I am proud of my husband, and what a smart, caring and skilled veterinarian he is. Over the years, it has amazed me how many faces and names he remembers of all his clients. He even remembers their pet’s name!

I am proud of Amanda and Tiffany and their recognition as outstanding women in the veterinary field. I am glad to have positive role models for our staff including Dr. Rachel Fernung, Dr. Allison Foust, and Dr. Denise Pearson. These veterinarians work on a relief basis and provide care to our patients when Dr. Hiss is out of the office. We appreciate them very much. 

I love being around our entire staff and watching their positive work ethic, skills and love hearing their laughter.

I am very thankful for the continued positive health reports on Dr. Hiss from his oncologist. His tumor has gotten almost 50% smaller and he can continue on his medication. We know eventually surgery will be necessary, but the smaller the tumor, the less invasive. So keep those prayers coming!!

Chelsie’s Story: Why I love my job

We have been working on a project at Pet Care Clinic called Why I Love My Job. Each month a staff member will have the opportunity to express what their job means to them. This is why Chelsie loves her job: 

“I’ve worked with animals most of my adult life thus far. Striving for their welfare is very important to me. I spent my time in an animal shelter previously, but I couldn’t have asked for a better clinic than Pet Care Clinic to start my transition into the veterinary field. Being a veterinarian is a part of who Dr. Hiss is. He takes his time with every appointment, no matter what stage of life the pet is in. The hospital staff is extremely knowledgeable and helps with so much more than people think. The office staff aims to work with client schedules and getting inquiry responses in a timely manner. This job wouldn’t be what it is without the exceptional people that I have the pleasure of working with every day.” -Chelsie

April is Heartworm Prevention Month

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets transmitted from a mosquito bite. Once bitten, it takes up to 6 months for adult worms to appear. View the amazing chart at the bottom of the blog to understand the lifecycle of a heartworm (hint: you can click on it to enlarge).

Heartworms are foot-long worms that not only live in the heart, lungs and the associated blood vessels. This can lead to heart failure, lung disease and damage to other organs. It is important that your pet is on year round prevention and is tested every 12 months to be sure they are free of heartworms.

Dogs are a natural host for heartworms and if left untreated the number of worms will only increase. Heartworm disease is a little different for cats. Unlike dogs, most worms in cats do not survive to become adults. However, if our feline friends do end up getting adult worms they typically only have one to three which is a very low number compared to our canine pals.

You may wonder if your pet is at risk for getting this disease or if he/she really needs to be on prevention and the answer is YES! You may not know this, but heartworms are spreading to new regions of the country each year. The primary reason being, mosquitoes are blown a far distance by wind which results in them traveling to new areas. Secondly, infected pets are spreading to uninfected areas. Hopefully this helps everyone see why we encourage you (if you haven’t already) to get your pet started on heartworm prevention!
